The article looks at research by Professor James E. Austin of Harvard Business School, entitled '"The Other Leadership Arena," which suggests that most U.S. executives have made volunteering an integral part of their lives. Not only do many executives find it personally satisfying, but such participation also allows them to practice business skills and make professional contacts in ways not always possible through their everyday duties. Austin found that the senior executives he surveyed viewed board membership as a good way for managers to develop skills in leadership, mission and policy formulation, and interpersonal management. Austin's study concludes with guidelines to help executives make the most out of the time they donate to volunteer work. Among them are: choose wisely, don't overload, lead with your head, not your heart, and manage your involvement as a portfolio.

[*]谨慎选择欲参加或服务的非营利组织,选择具有相近或同样宗旨的机构,且自己的活动能力与之相配;
[*]工作适度,若自己参预的时间不足,那么就将机会推荐给同事;
[*]非营利组织在很多方面不同于企业等以利润为中心的机构,但是在管理效率方面,它们的要求是一样的,甚至对管理运行效率的要求更高,因此参预进志愿活动的管理者应当不要一时冲动,而要以理智为重;
