Date: 18 January 2008 (Friday)
Venue: DBS Auditorium
Event: Speed Up Your Career Evolution Seminar

Have you ever felt that you could accomplish much more than what you are doing now? Ever tried upgrading your skills for career advancement? How can you best harness your specific and unique talents to your own advantage? It is not uncommon that such thoughts send our neurotransmitters into an excitable state every now and then, like electric shocks jolting the monotony of our basic existence. Perhaps deep down in our subconscious is a frantic search for a greater goal in our career lives. This seemingly daunting search process is exactly what the seminar, Speed up Your Career Evolution, a Leadership Seminar organized by the Nanyang MBA Alumni Association held on 18 January 2008 at the DBS Auditorium, has addressed.

Four prolific speakers were invited to share their experience and knowledge. Providing powerful strategies on how to advance one’s career by means of continuous education, capitalizing one’s passion and curiosity quotients, differentiating oneself by developing special abilities and getting onto the radar of headhunters - they kept the overwhelming crowd spellbound throughout the entire seminar with their polished delivery. Mr Francis Lee, Regional General Manager of IFIS Pte Ltd, pointed out, "This event delivered fascinating macro understanding on talent management in a short and concise manner that covered a broad spectrum. I enjoyed it." "The line-up of speakers was impressive, all respective experts in their own domain, sharing with the audience great insights. A highly valuable and fruitful session!" added Mr Jeffery Long, Business Development Manager from Live Cargo Asia Pacific Pte Ltd.

The speakers were: Mr Leonard Yeow, Ms Jill Lee, Mr Paul Davies and Assoc Prof Wee Beng Geok.

Mr Leonard Yeow is the Founder President and Chief Executive Officer of The Eximius Group Pte Ltd. He is acknowledged as a professional career counsellor and master executive coach. He trained with Dr Suzanne Skiffington in Sydney and his coaching skills are deployed in his daily contacts with candidates. He is a career manager for several key professionals in the business marketplace. Leonard still regularly conducts career planning sessions for individuals and groups of professionals.

Ms Jill Lee is the Senior Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, Siemens Ltd China. She is the first Asian to be Country Chief Financial Officer and is a member of the management board for Siemens in China. Jill is responsible for overseeing the diverse business portfolio and leading commercial and corporate functions for Siemens in China.

Mr Paul Davies is the Regional Business Human Resource Manager of Hewlett-Packard for the Personal Systems Group (PSG) across Southeast Asia and Taiwan. He also has talent management responsibilities for the PSG business across the Asia-Pacific region. Prior to HP, Paul was with General Electric, responsible for talent management, succession planning and leadership development.

As an Associate Professor at the Division of Strategy, Management and Organization, Nanyang Business School (NBS), Prof Wee wears many hats. She teaches in the School’s postgraduate and executive education programmes, is the Programme Director of the NBS’ MBA Programme for Human Capital Management, and is also the Director of Asian Business Case Centre (ABCC), a case research and publication centre which she set up at NBS in 2000.

Present at the seminar were close to hundred and fifty alumni, MBA participants as well as undergraduates, some of whom also volunteered to help out at the event. Siti Yashira Binte Johan, an undergraduate felt that "The industry speakers gave cogent, insightful presentations and, overall, the seminar was incredibly engaging and useful. This has definitely been one of the best seminars I've attended. I also appreciate the opportunity to interact with other guests." she said.

The seminar proved to be a splendid platform for networking as much as it has achieved its purpose of providing some valuable insights to our much appreciative participants, who stayed behind to mingle even after the seminar. Perhaps famous networking guru Bob Burg said it right, "It isn't just what you know, and it isn't just who you know. It's actually who you know, who knows you, and what you do for a living." Now this could really be the missing link in your career evolution.
